Protecting Children and Vulnerable Adults Policy Template

A safeguarding policy template setting out the organisation's policy and procedures to protect children and vulnerable adults, applying to all staff, volunteers, agency staff, contractors, apprentices and third-party suppliers.

The policy has Approved By and Date Approved fields and carries a Public information classification, so it can be shared with workers, clients and other interested parties.

What the Safeguarding Policy Covers

  • Principles - welfare as the primary concern, everyone's right to protection from abuse, and everyone's responsibility to report concerns
  • Criminal record checks - at the level each role is eligible for, including a barred list check for regulated activity
  • Who is covered - anyone with contact with, or access to information about, children and vulnerable groups
  • Organisational commitments - safe participation, respecting rights and wishes, procedures, recruitment, training and supervision
  • Designated safeguarding lead - receiving concerns, giving advice, keeping records and making referrals, with a guidance line for their name and contact details
  • Reporting concerns - straight away to the designated safeguarding lead, or to another senior manager if the concern is about them
  • Confidentiality - concerns recorded and shared only with those who need to know
  • Barring referrals - referral to the relevant barring service where the law requires
  • Review - at least once a year at management review

Two Versions Supplied

The main policy refers to criminal record checks, the relevant barring service and data protection law without naming them. P-104 Protecting Children and Vulnerable Adults Policy (V2) names the Disclosure and Barring Service and the UK GDPR and adds a legislation section, for organisations in the UK that want the references spelled out.

Using the Policy

Add your company name and logo, check each commitment matches what your organisation does and edit any that do not, then approve and date the policy and share it with workers and anyone else who needs to see it.

Who Needs a Safeguarding Policy?

Organisations whose staff, volunteers or contractors work with children or vulnerable adults, or have access to information about them.

Document Control

The footer carries the policy number and title, information classification, version and page numbers, and the approval fields record who approved the policy and when, so it can be controlled with the rest of your management system documents and listed on a document register such as the F-IMS20 Document Register.
